CAFE4DM exhibits at Science Spectacular 2018

25 October 2018

On Saturday 20 October members of the CAFE4DM project attended the Science Spectacular family science fun day.

This year, CAFE4DM post-doctoral research associates participated in “Science Spectacular”, an annual family science fun day which is part of the wider Manchester Science Festival. Over 1300 visitors attended the event which took place across Manchester Museum and Whitworth Hall on Sat 20 October 2018.

CAFE4DM’s stand focused on complex fluids, specifically looking at “Ooblek” and an example of a “Boger fluid”. Ooblek is a non-Newtonian fluid made from cornflour and water that changes its viscosity when pressure is applied. “Boger” fluids are elastic fluids with constant viscosity. There was a lot of interest from children who loved delving in and getting messy!

Outreach is a specific activity CAFE4DM has committed to and we plan to attend at least 3 events a year. Our outreach focus on complex fluids is highly relevant to the project given the presence of these fluids within Unilever formulations and the challenges these fluids present when mixing.
