Children explore the properties of Oobleck with CAFE4DM volunteers

Wandering around the Trafford Centre on Sunday 10 March you may have bumped into CAFE4DM colleagues at Science X. They were busy being rushed off their feet by children keen to play and discover "Oobleck’s" unique and fun properties.

Science X was launched in 2016 by the University during Manchester’s year as the European City of Science. The event is a unique opportunity for the University, allowing us to showcase our work and interact with people who would not typically seek out science and engineering activities. Outreach continues to be of the upmost importance encouraging children into STEM subjects and Science X is a critical event for the Faculty of Science and Engineering’s outreach programme. You can read a full article about Science X here.

Our Oobleck activity was very popular, (requiring a queuing system at the height of the day) with over 1000 children people donning gloves and getting messy across the day. Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid made from a mixture of cornflour and water and parents were delighted to hear they could replicate the experiment at home when they saw how much their children enjoyed playing with it.
